No complaints, so far. In the Summer of 2020, I built a long-envisioned camper conversion of my 1991 Toyota Previa van. As the primary feature, I wanted a full-length double bed, at the foot of which would be positioned a camping kitchenette. With this layout, along the style of vintage teardrop trailers, the cook stands outside beneath the raised tailgate. Once the bed was in place, very little space remained between the foot of the bed and the tailgate. However, it was just enough space for a kitchen counter with camp stove, food drawers, 5-gallon water jug, and the Joy Tutus 26-quart 12-volt refrigerator. After considerable Internet searching, I chose this particular refrigerator based on three qualifications: price, performance, and dimensions. The dimensions were critical, as the refrigerator had to fit within a specific, very tight space. So size was the starting point of my search for an appropriate unit. From there, price was my next consideration. One can easily spend $700 or more for a 12-volt refrigerator. But is that really necessary? After doing a lot of online product comparisons, it became pretty clear to me that one DOESN’T have to spend a small fortune for a reliable, portable refrigerator. So I confined my search to the low-price end, focusing then on reliability scores and appliance appearance, or style. And the Winner is…. in my assessment…. the Joy Tutus 12-volt refrigerator. Some reviewers gave reduced scores for a lid that doesn’t seal properly (mine works absolutely fine), or the fact that the side handles are recessed and not particularly suited to carrying the unit any distance. This latter complaint may well be valid, depending upon intended use. But in my own case, I NEEDED recessed handles, as protruding handles would have prevented fitting the unit within the tight confines of my camper conversion. The only time I used the handles was when I placed the fridge into its fixed position. They haven’t been touched, or needed, since. For built-in use, the Joy Tutus is ideal; no handles extend to interfere with adjacent, built-in features. Other reviewers have complained about noise when the unit’s in operation. My own unit is very quiet; almost inaudible. It can be heard, if you listen closely. But it’s not anything to interfere with sleep. And performance is excellent. If set to do so, it will freeze food solid. But I use it just to refrigerate, setting the digital thermostat to around 34 degrees, finding that nothing freezes, but everything stays as cold as if from a home refrigerator. Battery drain is minimal. I run my LED camping lights and this fridge off of two, 12-volt deep cell batteries, connected in parallel — camping in 3-to-4-day stints. When I get home, only about a half-hour of charging tops-off the batteries. So the fridge uses very little “juice” and a dual, deep cell battery bank is probably overkill, in terms of reserve capacity. Besides performance and dimensions, what sold me on this particular 12-volt appliance was its appearance. The real thing looks just like the posted images on Amazon. It arrived extremely well-packed, and was received without damage. The finish is unblemished and of high gloss. I find myself being very protective of it, wanting to preserve its like-new, quality appearance. Of course, nothing’s perfect. My only demerits for this product are the instructions (poorly written, clearly by a non-English speaker); and the manufacturer’s name (I’m OK with “Joy” — but what the heck is a “Tutus”?). Oh, well, these are not serious concerns. The instructions can be deciphered, by reading between the lines. And the manufacturer, as if to recognize the deficiencies of the written instructions, has placed a very helpful overlay directly on the fridge’s control panel. The overlay clearly shows you how to operate the unit. As for the fridge’s name: in my opinion, it’s a bit odd — but not enough to detract from what I believe should be the product’s 5-star rating. If the quart capacity meets your needs, I highly recommend giving this portable refrigerator serious consideration. In my own experience, its quality has proven to be excellent.

I use this in the mid row of my Subaru Wilderness. I’ve only ever used it on ECO mode which I assume runs less often and at less wattage. Letting the thermostat drift more before kicking on, and then using a lower cooling setting. But this is perfect for my needs since I exclusively use a portable power station to power it. Once it’s full of cold drinks it doesn’t need to run often, the drinks holding the temp fairly well. The display is NICE and has an auto lockout feature so that you can stack stuff on it without changing the settings. Initially there was a rattling sound when it was running and I was worried that it was a bearing or something. Then I realized that the way I had it in my car, the entire heavier cooler portion was hanging over the lip of the seat support it was on. I put a full cooler length wooden support underneath the unit, and shimmed it up as needed and I haven’t heard a peep out of it, unless it’s super quiet, and then it is a pleasant soft whir of air moving. During vehicle operation or out at the beach, I can’t hear it at all, running or not. But the proof that it does work is the thermostat readout, and the ice cold drinks that I pull out. And here is a tip. If you take a drink out, put a drink in. This type of cooler is the most efficient when it has more items inside of it to help retain the work it has done. If it is half empty, you have to recool a lot of air when it’s opened for a while. So keep it on the full side. And when possible keep it shut. I cover the top with a white towel because I usually stack a chair or something on it when driving, and also because it doesn’t always pay to advertise in some areas. I like to fly under the radar. The unit works as expected and does the job well enough. But it’s not perfect by any means. It has a large enough interior and is light enough when unloaded to be convenient and handy for a single person. The handles are not meant for two people carrying it, so if it’s loaded with heavy stuff, it may get a little cumbersome.* Two of the feet pads were never installed, they were loose in the box but still had the protector on the adhesive side at least so I could install them.* The feet do not stay attached well. If you slide the unit into and out of the back of a SUV at all, the feet will grab into the carpet and just detach. This is annoying. While not really needed in the back of the car, they are required when you put it on the floor in the kitchen otherwise the plastic scratches the surface you put the unit on. So be careful.* The noise level was very quiet 99% of the time. If you pay attention you can hear the compressor turn on but it’s below the level of any noise even in the EV I was using it in when driving. But once in a while, the compressor gets very noisy. I can’t correlate the extra noise to any specific action that would cause it. I even let it run in the house stationary and demonstrated the same thing; twice in the day it made the extra noise.* The internal temps can vary by +-3 degrees. The concern here comes if you set it between 32-34 degrees, it may freeze items in it for short periods of time as the temps drop below 32. The temp display isn’t accurate due to how the physical cooling inside happens, from the edges without a fan. The edges near the top can get very cold even when set to 35 degrees, causing frost buildup and anything touching that area can conduct cold into it freezing canned sodas. Just keep things away from that top edge (2″ around the top).* The thickness of the insulation is lacking. While it can cool and keep cool when powered, if the power is removed it can warm up pretty quickly (two hours!). You can feel the coldness come through the insulation on the short side opposite the compressor. While the other sides are just cool, that one side is pretty bad. Wish they would double the insulation and make it slightly larger. Sure, you buy the extra tote which adds a thin bubble wrap like insulation, I don’t think that would be enough. Just design it in!* While it comes with sperate 12v DC and 110v AC, and both have a good grippy plug for inserting and pulling out of the cooler, the panel that the port is mounted in is flimsy and it bends in and out when you do so. This little panel I expect to crack over time due to how tight (which is good) the connection is and how much force is required to insert/remove.I can’t tell you how it compares to others, but reviews for most of these types of units; even ones twice the price; all list some of these same problems. I am satisfied with cost versus value of this unit, and it does the job I need.I removed half a star for the poor installation of feet and the poor design of them.I removed another half star for random loud noises and the poor insulation.
