With the uptick in walking and hiking I thought this would be the perfect time to teach the boys some orienteering. They are young so I didn’t want to get them anything expensive, they are also super prone to dropping things. So far these have been great. They stand up to all the usual things you do with a compass like throwing them at rocks, swinging them above your head while riding a bike, and spinning around circles trying to see if you are faster than the needle. The needle is a little slow but works just fine. The measurements are easy to read and the plastic is crystal clear. I bought two and quality is equally good on both. All in all a basic but solid purchase.

Good compass, cheap and reliable. I bought them for my kids to race in orienteering. My only complain is the clip used to attach the compass to th string, it is not strong enough, and makes it very easy to lose the compass (my son lost his during his second race). Solution is super easy, just attach the compass directly to the string, and get rid of the clip.

It would be five stars but the compass sticks more than it should when turning.

If you’re doing long-range navigation or serious outback hiking, this is probably not the compass for you. However, if you’re going for trail-based hikes, doing basic orienteering or compass course, this is a great little tool. The declination bezel is a nice feature for a compass at this price point. That said, it’s not the most durable, and any kind of serious hard knocks can cause a crack, and if it’s bad enough to allow the water to seep out…

Purchased to use with our 4 year old grandson who LOVES maps. He is totally into this and it keeps him engaged on the little hikes we do with him.

Great compass for the price. Tested it against more expensive compasses and it’s accurate. Good for basic use.

The compass action is not smooth and pointing north seems to be hit or miss. Maybe as a toy, but don’t use this for navigation, scouting, or anything where you might need to depend on it.
