I bought this remote starter as a gift for my brother and his baby daughter (my niece) so that he keeps his car warm during the cold months. The Compustar CS-920-S is an entry level remote starter kit. The included 1-way remotes are 1000 feet in range with no audible or visual confirmation indicating your car is locked/unlocked/remote started/trunk opened. The LED turns solid blue when pressing the buttons. One single press on the Lock or Unlock buttons to operate the door locks on your car. The Trunk release button must be pressed and held down for 2.5 seconds to open your car’s trunk (if trunk is wired to the remote start module). To remote start the car, the remote start button (the button with the asterisk) must be pressed and held down for 2.5 seconds. Whereas, 2-way remotes will give you either sound and/or visual confirmation when pressing the buttons on the remotes. BUT, the module that comes with this kit, the CM900 module, is compatible with other Compustar 2-way remotes including fancy 2-way remotes with the LCD. So, if later on you need longer range 2-way remotes then there is no need to buy a new remote starter, all you have to do is buy a 2-way remotes kit (remove old antenna, plug in new antenna and program the new remotes to the system as indicated in page 5 of the installation manual) This module is also compatible with DroneMobile technology. The CM900 module is very small in size and is only good for remote starting automatic transmission vehicles. This module is not alarm upgradable since it does not have the necessary ports, siren port, shock sensor port, etc. The CM900 module has a built-in slot used for the bypass Blade-AL or Blade-TB by iDatalink. This module also has two additional bypass ports used for iDatalink AL-CA or Fortin bypass modules.Out the box the module is preconfigured and the wiring diagram is underneath the module indicating the default configuration. To change the features and Programmable Outputs or POC, you will need the Compustar OP-500 or the iDatalink ADS-USB interface. The OP-500 is more expensive than the ADS-USB interface. The advantage of the ADS-USB interface is that you can change the POC options and features online and you can also upload the firmware to the bypass module as required for each vehicle. I had to enable two options: Double Pulse Unlock and Tach Mode. The CM900 module is set as “Tachless Mode” this mode is not as reliable as “Tach mode” when the remote start has to crank the engine during cold months, see page 6 of the installation manual. This remote starter was installed in a 2003 Toyota Corolla which required no bypass module. This cut down on the installation time i had to spend working on this car.

Installed well. Has some good features and expandability, but I do wish alarm options could be added on. While the system does work well, the key fob buttons are constantly being pressed in my pocket even when there’s nothing else in the pocket. That’s a first for me. For that reason, the fob gets set aside anytime I’m working on the vehicle (or there’s a valet mode, which is easy to activate). Range has been an issue, even with a fresh battery in the remote. I’ve found that I can’t let my hand wrap around the fob when I’m pressing buttons because it doesn’t seem to transmit out of the antenna bump, but rather from the back left of the fob. With my hand in the way I often can’t even unlock the vehicle when I am standing within 10 feet. The factory fob has been much more reliable. It is nice to know that when I eventually have the money to spare I can upgrade to the 2-way fob, which is hopefully better. Overall I would purchase this system again, I’m just hoping the range issues get better. Today it took repeated presses when I tried to remote start the vehicle from about 30 feet away. I finally had to stick my arm out the front door and give it a couple of tries.

Works great, however the instructions are minimally helpful at best. Instruction manual mentions a website for more detailed instructions, but that website requires registration and 2 days before you can use it after registering. Default minimum crank time was not sufficient to start my car, bit of a nightmare changing that in menu to +0.6sec to get the car to actually start. I hope that doesn’t default back to stock setting if I disconnect the battery. Make sure you our other service techs disconnect the battery before servicing the car. if you accident press the remote start button in your pocket while getting your oil changed you will be buying a new engine or responsible for someone loosing a hand. post the warning sticker conspicuously under the hood and always tell the tech to disconnect the battery before service!!!

This unit basically does what it says it will do. I have a 2005 Crown Vic and I found the installation to be rather straightforward. Then again, I do have experience with emergency vehicle upfits and component / P25 radio installs, so I might have an edge on someone green in this area. One function which does not work is the trunk pop feature – this is on a cable that does not come with this unit but is available separately. The warning is that if you buy this to install it yourself, you’re on your own. Firstech does not believe you are capable and if you ask for support on their product, they’ll basically tell you to go to hell – we won’t support self installs blah blah and then refer you to some third party install site (12volt or something). So, to recap, Firstech believes that if you are an installer of stereos and alarms, and do it professionally, then you are a good person but if you do this on your own, then to hell with the whole lot of you. Thanks for your money, but shove off.
