First, the value can’t be beaten. $250 for the dealer to replace one fob? No thanks. That made this purchase a no-brainer. The caveat? It’s not a simple “replace the chipboard into the new shell and you’re good to go”.THE PROBLEM:The inner workings of the new shells DO NOT match the inner workings of the original fob. The chipboard fits perfectly fine in the new shell, all of the posts align as they should and the board is secure in the fob. The problem is with the switchblade. The old switchblade mechanism will not fit with the new shell.THE SOLUTION:If you have a few tools and some minor mechanical skills you can overcome this problem:1. Remove the keyblade on the original fob – poke out the small pin holding it in place (hammer and a picture-hanging-wall-nail) and slide the blade out. Do this for the new fob as well; remove the blank (Don’t lose either of the miniscule holding pins!).2. Slide the old blade into the new mechanism (mind the alignment, there’s a groove that needs to align with the locking pinhole) and lock it in place by gently hammering the locking pin into place.2a. At this point, I had to get a 1/16 drill bit and clean the pin hole out a little bit to make sure the pin could actually go back into the new mechanism with the original blade.NEARLY CELEBRATORY BEER TIME:If you’ve made it this far…then youtube can carry you home with the little idiosyncratic annoyances to finish the task.Unfortunately, now my wife thinks that she has $479 “free money” to spend at Target or some nonsense since I saved so much money replacing my wife’s 2 fobs…

It fits, but won’t close now. Or stay together without a ziptie..dealt with this for years now… it wouldn’t close-the key, is what i mean, wouldn’t ever stay shut again, then it stared exploding on me, an I got sick of it due to the spring making it take a while to put back together, but it’s decent if u know how to put it together, and it’s the right size for you. Again I wouldn’t recommend though, I would take a small l an go to the dealership for a replacement. I had money back when I fixed this key too, and I still use it to this day, but I have had it open, like this, an with a ziptie shortly after, for years since I got it… not very pleased. Now I don’t have the money to replacement from dealership so.. im stuck with this.. I really wish this company would hear me out an give me a 50% refund possibly.. even the picture has worn out very easily an fast on the back.. its cheaply made but again, if you’re in a squeeze an need a little short replacement till u can afford a new key, this is the thing for you! Remember, it’s just the casing (my key is put inside of the case in this picture it doesn’t come like that exactly)

Our other fob, all the buttons were broken out. I bought this one, my husband put it together – it seemed to go together easy but something happened and the thing that locks the key down- doesn’t seem to work. It doesn’t hold it down. But we can live with it. It was probably assembly operator error. Will be getting another one.

I bought this shell after my key buttons caved in on my original key. I spent about half an hour trying to wind the spring and place the cover on only to have the button not function. I was using my original blade with the new button as one of the three “prongs” on my original button were broken. Finally, I discovered that the new button fits the new blade perfectly and can be installed with ease, simply winding the spring once around and closing the shell. It appears the cut outs in the new blade are mm off from the factory key. This means I could not use my existing blade with the new button and would need to get this blade cut.$50 later and the blade is cut and the key assembled. The feel of this key is amazing and the addition of the Chevy logo compared to other new shells is a nice touch. Oh, there is a Chevy decal sticker INSIDE the shell that covers the cutout, it’s tiny and goes flying when you pry the blank apart, so try not to lose it.How to install spring: there is a few YouTube videos, they’re all generic enough to apply to any “flip key”. You need to put the spring into the bottom of the shell, lining up the metal tab with the cutout in the shell. Next place the button on the top of the spring and turn it until it locks into place and the spring starts to twist. Then place the blade on the button until it comes through the whole significantly , it only fits one way. Next you’ll twist the blade, button, and spring counter clockwise once. Then press the blade firmly against the bottom shell in its closed position, it should be flush, you might need to open and close the blade manually without releasing the spring tension to get the button to slide into the slot of the lower shell. Finally, and assuming you’ve already set the chip into the lower half of the shell, you’ll place the top half of the shell on top of the lower half while holding the blade to prevent the spring from pushing the blade out of position. Simply place the screw into the back and stick the Chevy decal over the sticker and you’re done. Oh, and the battery and battery cover.

Mostly easy to assemble, however there are no good instructions on how to disassemble the “donor/original”. Getting the key to swing out properly takes a trick. I had issues finding someone to cut these.

My old key on the left – shell on the right. I admit I didn’t realize it was a shell when I purchased. However, it worked perfect for fixing my torn up fab. Just replaced the inside and the key – no issue. I just bought a second one to replace my spare.
